ORCCA (Open-Response Chemistry Cognitive Assistant) is an online intelligent tutoring system developed to support students as they formulate and complete calculations in introductory chemistry. The learning activities are freeform, meant to emulate problem solving with paper and pencil while offering realtime feedback and next-step hints when needed. These tutors were created using the Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools (CTAT) from Carnegie Mellon University. We are able to support a wide variety of problem types due to knowledge representation in the form of production rules, which together cover most of the quantitative reasoning in first-year chemistry.
